What is a Lake District?

Long Lake is managed by a lake district, as opposed to a lake association. The major difference is that an association is a voluntary organization, and a lake district is a state-regulated institution with taxing authority. Each person who owns property on the lake (known a riparian owner) is automatically a member of the district and can attend and vote at the annual meeting. Each owner is allotted a vote, so a household may have more than one voting member. While others are encouraged to attend the annual meeting, only owners may vote; absentee or proxy voting is not allowed. The Long Lake of Phelps Lake District traditionally holds its annual meeting on the first Saturday of July.

The district is governed by Wisconsin State Statute 33, and is run by a board of five people. Of that board, three are elected to three-year terms by the riparian owners at the annual meeting, and the other two are appointed from local government agencies (one from Phelps and one from Vilas County). All of the board positions are unpaid. To learn more about lake district governance, visit the UW Extension Lakes page.

Though districts can be used to accomplish many different objectives the two guiding principles that the LLPPD district was founded on and which we continue to work towards are 1) improving and maintaining the lake’s sport fishery and 2) combating aquatic invasive species.
